What Happens?
On the first visit, the Indian Head Massage practitioner will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. The client remains fully clothed whilst the treatment is performed and the client sits on a chair for the treatment. The treatment starts with a series of deep breaths being taken by yourself while the therapist lays her hands on your shoulders. There then follows a series of massage movements including :-
• effleurage which is a gentle smoothing technique that helps to calm and lightly increase circulation;
• petrissage movements are a little like "kneading dough" and help to increase removal of waste products from tissue and encourage fresh oxygen and nutrients to it;
• tapotment movements include quick striking manipulations which are highly stimulating, help to tone muscles and revitalise the body;
• vibration movements are shaking or trembling techniques which if applied lightly are soothing and bring about relaxation or if applied more deeply have a stimulating effect on the nerves and are refreshing; and
• pressure movements which are applied using the fingers and thumbs they help to clear nerve pathways, increase circulation, restore energy and balance the body.
A combination of these techniques are applied to the shoulders, neck, head, scalp, back, face and upper arms.
A treatment session usually lasts for about one hour. A course of treatments may be recommended, depending on your body's needs.
